What's it all about?

I think that facebook can be for friendly interactions but also for people to advertise their businesses and events they are holding. I personally think people really only use facebook to stay connected with their friends but if they have something coming up that they want to share its a good opportunity to use facebook. Wherever we go today there are advertisements everywhere; So of course there going to be on facebook. But I believe that facebook was created for social networking and I want it to stay that way.
I believe that you should have complete control over who sees your information. You can decide what information you want to include on your facebook and I think its important to not put a lot of important information. My facebook is set to private so only people I friend can see my page. The only information people can see if their not my friend is my profile picture and my name.
I really dont like that my information is sold to companies but if I want to continue using facebook I really don't have a choice. When I go on facebook I tend to ignore the advertisements, I almodt forget that they're there.
Overall, I think it's important for people to be cautious of what they put on facebook because you never know who is going to see it. Of course you cant control your data being sold but you can limit what personal information you put on your page.
If I had to introduce facebook to someone who has never used it before I would probably explain it as a social networking site. I would also explain that even though its for staying connected with friends its also a place for companies to advertise. Even though the advertisements get annoying at times you just have to stay focused on the big picture. I really believe facebook is a way to socialize and connect with people and I hope it continues to stay that way.

Facebook: A help or a distraction?

When I first heard about facebook I was a little skeptical because I had just created a myspace at the time and it honestly wasn't doing much for me. But once I created a facebook I was thrilled. Not only did it start new friendships for me it helped me stay in contact with my exisiting ones.
I have to admit at times facebook is a distraction for me because I might choose it over doing reading for homework, but this is not always the case. I think facebook opens a new world for people. They can keep up with news and events and see what their friends are up to. They can also talk to people they might not have ever had a chance to meet in person becasue of distance or shyness.
I certainly believe that facebook has been a positive impact on my life. I personally am a quiet person and can be shy at times. So facebook has honestly helped me grow in a sense that I talk to people I probably wouldn't have in person. I also have a very big family that is spread out allover the US, through facebook we can all stay connected and keep up with each other.
I think it really comes down to how you use facebook. If your just using it for socializing and keeping up with everyone then I really think it can be a positive experience. However, if you wind up stalking people on it and spending your whole day just on facebook it can pull you away from reality which is obviously not a good thing.

What Saint Rose Can Learn?

I think there are a few main things that CSR could do to improve its socail media presence. The first would be improving its main website. I find the website to be very disorganized and its usually pretty hard to find something that I'm looking for. I feel that they should develop a specific section just for students already at Saint Rose that contains all the general information that we need to know and things that are useful to us. They could also get rid of the drop down menus because they become fustrating.

Second I feel that CSR should have tabs that highlight the main aspects of the college. The things you need to know like Admissions, Academics, and Student Life which would make finding things easier because once you clicked on one of the tabs you would be
brought to a menu with different topics listed under that tab.

Lastly they should work on their facebook page. By adding more pictures of student life it could give prospecting students a general idea of what Saint Rose is like, a more freindly feeling. I also think if they utilized their events tab on the facebook page it would be easier for current students to see what was going on at their college.

Engaging Fan Pages

One fan page I love that I think is very effective is Forever21. This page has over 4 million fans including me. Forever 21 has recently became an extremely popular clothing store that has a casual 70's style feel. Everyday this page is keeping it's fans updated. It'll make posts about weekly sales and new clothing that has come out. I think this page is effective because of its constant updates. They're always interacting with their fans somehow. From posts about their new clothing line from starting a discussion about a new trend. Fans always have a chance to write their input and ideas they have about the clothes Forever 21 sells. It's also a great page to check out what Forever 21 has before you actually go to the store. That way you have a feel for what your looking for. I really enjoy looking at this page everytime I go on facebook and I feel with 4 million fans they have to be doing something right.
